The Most Treacherous Grade in Tennessee
Interstate 24 through the Cumberland Plateau isn’t just another stretch of highway — it’s one of the most notorious grades a trucker will ever drive. The eastbound descent drops nearly 2,000 feet over about five miles at a 6% grade, and it’s claimed enough lives and brake jobs over the decades that Tennessee Highway Patrol built two dedicated runaway truck ramps into the left shoulder, near mile markers 138.2 and 139.4, specifically to catch vehicles that lose their brakes on the way down.
Reduced truck speed limits, a left-lane law built specifically for ramp access, tight curves, and fog that rolls in over the plateau with little warning — this grade punishes drivers and tow operators who don’t already know its habits.
