If you’re on a busy highway or interstate shoulder, it’s generally safer to exit the vehicle through the passenger-side door (away from traffic) and wait on the guardrail or grass. If you’re in a well-lit, lower-traffic area, staying inside your locked vehicle may be the safer choice. Turn on your hazard lights immediately regardless of where you wait.
